PRospective Evaluation of perinatal management of PREmature infants

Prepre protocol 2009 (Pdf)

Perinatal management of premature infants born at the margins of viability continues to be a hot topic in perinatology. In 2005 the Dutch Association of Pediatrics and the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology reached a consensus on treatment of extreme premature infants at birth and decided to prospectively evaluate the decision process at birth and outcome of infants covered by this consensus.

Study design
Multicentre prospective collection of outcome of premature infants born at 23 to 27 weeks of gestation in the Netherlands.

Study population
Premature infants with gestational ages between 23 and 27 weeks born in the 10 perinatal centers.

Data collection and outcome measures
Both obstetricians and neonatologists collect data on management of these extreme premature infants in the delivery room. Additional data on the mother are noted to allow for linkage with maternal data in the LVR and neonatal data in the LNR databases. Outcome of the children will be obtained from the follow-up ecaminations at 1 and 2 years of age.

Duration of the study
12 months from January 1 until December 31, 2009.
